Alex Pattie was used to living off his wits as he drove through some of the most dangerous roads in Europe. After facing bandits in the Balkans during the Bosnian war and running the gauntlet of bureaucratic customs officers in Kazakhstan, Pattie gave up ‘working for the big boys’ to compete against them instead.

Although setting up his own haulage firm in Coalville, Leicestershire did not pose such a personal danger to him as driving across parts of Europe scarred by war, Pattie still understood the challenges ahead for his new company Foxwood Freight Services.

With a shoestring budget he worked alone. ‘I started off with £100 by doing freight forwarding initially, and then with the more work I got, I bought a vehicle and drove it myself. It just grew from there. It was OK but stressful, extremely long hours, and a lot of hard work.’

Foxwood now run a fleet of mid-weight range vehicles primarily operating in the UK, but can also distribute across Europe.
